                                                Useful Library Services for In-Service

Hello everyone.  This blog is part of an assignment about using and creating blogs for EDM 510.  I hope you will find this blog easy to use and helpful.  Now, let's get started.

School is fast approaching!!  As the LMS, at my school, I am considering topics to cover during my "back to school" library services and materials in-service for teachers.  I have come up with a list of topics that I think would be useful for teachers as they prepare to begin school, but I would love to have your input.  There will not be enough time for me to go over every service with the teachers, so I need your help to prioritize my list.

Simply, rearrange the bulleted list I am providing in the order that you think would be most helpful to teachers.  Please place the topic you would consider to be the most useful at the top and the topic that would be the least useful at the bottom.  I would love to know why you selected a certain topic to be the most useful.  Also, if you have any suggestions for different topics, just add those to your list.

  • Using Alabama Virtual Library
  • Accessing our library software system from your classroom or home
  • Audio visual materials and equipment
  • Setting up collaboration times for upcoming projects
  • Using Accelerated Reader in the classroom
  • Periodicals for students and integrating them into the classroom
  • Classroom book sets with suggested lesson plans and ideas

I am looking forward to your responses.  Thanks in advance for your help.

  1. Here is how I would prioritize this list:

    1. Accessing library software system from your classroom or home
I believe this is the most important topic because it gives the students and
teachers another avenue of using and accessing useful library materials. I think
it's important for teachers to know what's available and how to use it. I also
think it's important that the teachers know how to use it so they can show the
students how to access these features at home as well.

    2. Classroom book sets with suggested lesson plans and ideas

    3. Using AVL

    4. Audio visual material and equipment

    5. Setting up collaboration times for upcoming projects

    6. Using AR in the classroom

    7. Periodicals for students and integrating them into the classroom

  2. Thanks, Sandy. I remember when I was a classroom teacher. I would have found it very beneficial to access the library's card catalog from my classroom or home. Thanks for your input.

  3. I can't really give you any helpful information because I am not a k-12 teacher so I do not know anything about these resources as it pertains to the classroom. However, I will give it a try.

  4. That is perfectly alright. I appreciate your opinion. Many teachers often forget that there are audio books available for check out in the library. It would be beneficial for me to remind them of the audio books and cd players that are available. I would also give each teacher a hand out list of audio books available.

  5. As a classroom teacher below is how I order the above from greatest importance to least.
    1. Audio Visual Materials & Equipment- (I need to check out devices for students who don't have them.)
    2. Classroom book sets that can be used to teach CCRS for RL & RI.
    3. Using Alabama Virtual Library
    4. Accessing library software system from classroom or home (digital book bins?)
    5. Periodicals for students and integrating them into the classroom
    6. Setting up collaboration times for upcoming projects
    7. Using Accelerated Reader in the classroom

  6. By devices, I think you are referring to iPads or laptops of some kind. It would be very important for me to explain the procedures and policies for checking out devices such as these. As more and more schools go to a BYOD program, libraries will definitely need to have extra devices for those students who do not have their own.

Thanks for taking the time to rank the activities.

  7. This is an excellent use of this technology to encourage both collaboration with classroom teachers and the use of the school library as an information resource.
